Been really enjoying the soul jazz artists coming out lately. After really diving into the Joomanji catalog, I heard about this new band, Space Captain, from Brooklyn NY.
Melding elements of hip hop, soul and psychedelic rock, the Brooklyn-based group are set to release their first double A-side “Easier”/ “Remedy”, with Tru Thoughts on July 24th, ahead of a debut EP later this year.
Big up to Cherries records for always putting out quality funk. Check out the new 7-inch from Benjamin.
From Cherries Records:
BENJAMIN comes back full force with two back-to-back modern soul burners. Side A, ‘Those Memories (Sneak Up On Me)’ is a mid-tempo live funk track, originally created for the infamous Toulouse Soul Club party in southern France. With a driving guitar/bassline combo, slinking funky drums and swelling synth lines, BENJAMIN encourages you to leave the past behind, never looking into the “rear view” mirror of love. On the B side, Cherries’ co-founder, DJ Shred One, serves up a stripped down extended edit version of ‘This Time’. Deeply influenced by the Chicago “steppers” sound, ‘This Time’ is a smooth and sultry quiet stormer, custom made for those who like their dance music sexy, sophisticated, cold and grown. It is the perfect 45 for the cool out hour, when it’s the lovers’ turn to take over the dancefloor.
Credit to Mike Zarin from Atlanta for always sharing good music. Saw him post this on Facebook today. Never heard of Incredible Polo before, but now he’s on my radar!
“This is it. The last of the Forgotten Songs. The last remaining tracks that were initially composed after The Hollow and around Bight.
Five pieces that grew up too late, or in the wrong way, to make those albums. But five songs that stuck in my head and that I wanted to share. The writing process is a long winding road and sometime there are detours. This is 5 of those tangents.”

There’s a really cool record store in West LA that I recently discovered (late pass), called Touch Vinyl. I found out they have an open tables event every Thursday, so I thought it would be fun to spin some records there. They liked my set enough to post on their Soundcloud page, so now you can enjoy. The selection there is well curated, from new releases in numerous genres to classic albums in great condition (saw D’angelo’s “Voodoo” album on the wall, promo).
Music from Little Dragon, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Thes One, John Klemmer, and much more.
I heard my boy DJ A-1 play this at Scenario tonight (a local friendly getdown), and this transported me to about 2006, when my man Choice 37 was putting out some seriously solid material (he has since moved to Korea to pursue music). The amazing vocal talents of Lauren Santiago can be heard around the break. Latin, b-boy, funky goodness right here. It has a danceable vibe with heavy drums, but then hits you with this really soulful keyboard/vocal breakdown that just stops you in your tracks. So glad I heard this tonight!
Swoon. Of course she’s Danish. I randomly stumbled across Oh Land today, and I’m not regretting it. Great sounds, from dance tunes to dream pop goodness like “Three Chances” below.
